Archive: Lance - Pilots the Red Lion

Lance was released on February 15, 2012 as part of Matty Collector's Voltron Classics line. Mattel's Voltron Classics line is based on the 1980's Voltron: Defender of the Universe animated television series. As part of the inaugural year of line, the five Voltron Force pilots and their corresponding lions could be purchased as a set on the day of their release or reserved via the Club Lion Force subscription service. Each pilot and lion include accessories, that when combined, help form a 23-inch tall Voltron. Sven--a sixth figure in the line--was a Club Lion Force exclusive available only to club subscribers.

Initially scheduled to be sold separately, Lance and the Red Lion were only available to purchase as a set, after Mattel decided to bundle the Voltron Force pilots with their respective lions. The Lance / Red Lion bundle was shipped in a single mailer box, but both items were packaged individually. In addition to the interactivity achieved from combining the five lions to form Voltron, Mattel also incorporated some creative and interactive features between the lions and their pilots. For example, Lance includes a red key that acts both as a stand for the figure and an instrument for activating the Red Lion's one-touch transformation features. The key is also used to open the Red Lion's cockpit, which Lance fits into.
